Play Nine Men's Morris online
Morris is a talking game: the groan when your mill closes is half the fun. MorrisTalk puts the classic board on one live voice call, so you can play with family and friends wherever they are.
What is MorrisTalk?
MorrisTalk is a free Nine Men's Morris game you play in your browser. There is nothing to install: open it on a phone, tablet or computer, sign in with Google, and you are at the board. It is made by GabbleGames, a family of live-voice board games.
Every game is a voice call
This is the difference. In MorrisTalk you and your opponent hear each other the moment the game starts. There is chat too, but most people just talk: the "no!" when a mill closes, the laugh when a flying man lands in the one gap you left open. It plays like the kitchen-table game it comes from, across any distance.
Play a friend with one link
Copy your invitation link, paste it in the family group chat, and whoever taps it sits down across from you. No friend free yet? A robot can take the other side until they arrive. The robot is a real opponent, so it is also a good way to practise the strategy tips.
Three versions of the game
- Nine Men's Morris: the classic, with flying at three men.
- Six Men's Morris: the shorter board, no flying.
- Twelve Men's Morris: diagonals and twelve men each.
The rules are explained in Nine Men's Morris rules and Six and Twelve Men's Morris. MorrisTalk enforces them for you: mills, the protection of men in mills, flying, blocked players, and draws after three repetitions or 50 quiet moves.
How a game goes
- Open MorrisTalk in your browser and sign in with Google.
- Pick Nine, Six or Twelve Men's Morris.
- Send your link to a friend, or sit down with a robot while you wait.
- Place your men one turn at a time, then slide them. The voice call is open from the first move.
- Close a mill, take a man, and keep talking. The game ends when someone is down to two men, cannot move, or when it is drawn.
On Android you can also play someone nearby with no internet connection at all.
Tips for your first game
- Start with Nine Men's Morris, the version with the most written about it.
- Say hello first. The call is open, and a game with a voice in it is a different game.
- Watch the middle ring: take a crossroads early and you will have room to move later.
- Check for blocks before you place each man. A mill threat you miss costs you a man.
- When down to three men, remember you can fly.
When you want to go deeper, read the strategy and tips, or look at how old the game really is.
Free to play
MorrisTalk is free. New adult accounts get coins for the bigger tables; coins are for bragging only and can never be cashed out. Players aged 13 to 17 only ever play other teens, never adults, and never for coins. Under 13s can't sign up.
Whatever your family calls it
Some call it Mühle, some malom, some merels or mills, and every family has a house rule or two: no flying, or flying only at the very end, or a mill that counts twice. MorrisTalk plays the usual rules, and the call gives you the place to argue about the rest. Read the names around the world to see how far the game has travelled.
Why play online?
- You can play with a grandparent in another country, and talk the whole time.
- There is no board to set up and no man to lose under the sofa.
- The rules are enforced for you, which settles house-rule arguments, mostly.
- Games are short enough for a lunch break.
